Your Kilimanjaro Itinerary

Follow the journey day by day, from your pre-climb preparation in Arusha through the changing ecological zones of Kilimanjaro, summit night and your return from the mountain. Each day is paced around safe progress, acclimatisation and the conditions your guides find on the trail.

Day 1

Arrival and private briefing

Your Kilimanjaro journey begins with a private transfer to your lodge and time to recover from travel. In the evening, your lead guide reviews the route, checks personal equipment and explains the pace, safety procedures and health monitoring used on the mountain. We also confirm your park paperwork, dietary requirements and personal climbing goals, and answer any last questions before departure. You will have time to organise your duffel and daypack, charge devices and get a good night’s sleep; the aim is to begin the mountain rested, prepared and clear about what each day will involve.

Day 2

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa

Travel to Londorossi Gate for registration and continue to the western trailhead. Walk through quiet rainforest to Mti Mkubwa, where the lower traffic and rich forest create a gentle introduction to the Lemosho side of Kilimanjaro. Your guide keeps the walking pace deliberately steady, with regular opportunities to drink, adjust layers and take short rests. On reaching camp, the priority is recovery: a warm meal, hydration, a health check and a clear briefing about the next day so you always understand what lies ahead.

Mountain stage: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
Day 3

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1

Climb out of the rainforest into heath and open moorland. As you reach Shira Ridge and descend gently toward Shira 1, the scale of the Shira Plateau and distant Kibo cone begin to dominate the landscape. The open plateau gives wide views across the old Shira volcanic landscape and, when the weather clears, toward Kibo. Walking is kept intentionally steady because the altitude is now a more important factor than distance alone. After reaching camp, there is time for lunch, recovery and, where appropriate, a short acclimatisation walk before returning to sleep lower and continue the climb-high, sleep-low strategy.

Mountain stage: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1
Day 4

Shira 1 to Moir Hut

Cross the Shira Plateau toward the remote Moir Valley. The long but gradual traverse gives excellent mountain views and ends near Lent Hills, where an optional acclimatisation walk may be possible.

Mountain stage: Shira 1 to Moir Hut
Day 5

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

Leave the busier southern trails and begin the northern traverse around Kilimanjaro. The route rises and falls across alpine desert, with expansive views toward Kenya and a strong sense of wilderness around Buffalo Camp. Day 6

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave

Continue east across Kilimanjaro’s remote northern slopes on rolling high-altitude terrain. The quieter trail and gradual profile make this an important acclimatisation day before the final approach toward the summit base. This quieter northern section is one of the reasons climbers choose the longer circuit: there are fewer groups, broad views toward Kenya and more days for gradual altitude adaptation. The trail still includes repeated ascents and descents, so the guide keeps the effort controlled and uses the afternoon for rest and health monitoring. Each day here is part of the preparation for the final approach to the summit.

Day 7

Third Cave acclimatisation circuit

Spend a quieter day acclimatising on the northern slopes. A controlled hike to higher terrain followed by a return to camp gives the body useful altitude exposure without the strain of moving camp. The trail still includes repeated ascents and descents, so the guide keeps the effort controlled and uses the afternoon for rest and health monitoring. Day 8

Third Cave to School Hut

Climb steadily toward School Hut beneath Kibo. The afternoon is reserved for rest, hydration, an early meal and final preparation for the summit, with your guide checking clothing layers, headlamps and wellbeing. Mountain stage: Third Cave to School Hut
Day 9

School Hut to Uhuru Peak and Mweka

Start before midnight and climb toward the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak if conditions permit. After sunrise on the roof of Africa, descend via Barafu and continue lower to Mweka Camp, completing a long but unforgettable summit day. This is the longest and most demanding stage of the itinerary, so the emphasis is on a slow, consistent rhythm rather than speed. Your guide checks how you are responding to altitude throughout the ascent and can adjust the pace or turnaround decision when necessary. After the summit photographs, the descent requires equal concentration; you return to lower elevation for food, rest and a well-earned night in thicker air.

Day 10

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, complete national park formalities and receive summit certificates. Your private transfer meets you for the drive back to the lodge and a well-earned recovery. Before walking, the team completes park registration, weighs crew loads and organises the equipment for the mountain. Once on the trail, your guide sets a deliberately comfortable pace with regular pauses for water, layers and photographs; lunch is taken en route or at camp depending on the day. On arrival, the crew helps you settle in, followed by a warm meal, a health check and a briefing for the following stage.

Safety, Acclimatisation & Crew Care

Kilimanjaro carries genuine altitude and weather risk. Summit success cannot be guaranteed. Guides make safety decisions in the field, and a climber may need to descend if continuing is unsafe.

Training, suitable equipment and honest communication about health are essential. Your final documents include a detailed packing list and preparation guidance.

Required

Insurance covering trekking and emergency evacuation to at least 6,000 metres.
