Ol Doinyo Lengai
A challenging night ascent of the Maasai “Mountain of God,” paired with the stark beauty of Lake Natron and a journey shaped by local knowledge.
Where the Rift Valley rises
Ol Doinyo Lengai stands above Lake Natron in one of northern Tanzania’s most dramatic landscapes. Its Maa name means “Mountain of God,” reflecting its deep spiritual importance to Maasai communities.
The ascent is steep, loose and physically demanding. It is a walking climb rather than a technical mountaineering route, but it calls for fitness, determination and an experienced local guide. Climbs usually begin around midnight so trekkers can reach the upper mountain near sunrise and descend before the strongest heat.

The pace can be adjusted around your arrival plans, fitness and the conditions on the mountain.

Travel through the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Natron. After settling into your lodge or camp, take a guided walk to a nearby waterfall, enjoy dinner and rest. Your guide gives a final equipment and safety briefing before the late-night departure.

An active mountain requires flexibility
Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano. Ash, heat, wind, rain, visibility and volcanic activity can change the plan at short notice. Summit access is never guaranteed, and your guide has final authority to turn the group around.
We recommend strong hiking fitness, sturdy broken-in boots, gloves, layered clothing, a headlamp and comprehensive insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.
