Why Udzungwa

Trade the safari vehicle for the forest trail.

Udzungwa brings a completely different pace to a Tanzania journey. Dense forest, mountain ridges, streams and waterfalls make this a place to walk, listen and notice the smaller details of the landscape.

For Legacy travellers, Udzungwa works beautifully between safari areas or as part of a more active southern itinerary. We choose trails around fitness, weather and the amount of time guests want to spend in the forest.

Inside the mountains

Forest, waterfalls and endemic life.

The Eastern Arc mountains are known for biological richness and local endemism. Udzungwa’s trails reveal that story gradually, through changing elevation and forest type.

When to go

Choose timing around the experience.

Drier months are generally easiest for hiking, although the forest can be visited across much of the year. Rain creates lush conditions and fuller waterfalls but also muddier trails and more variable access.

Getting there

Best combined with the wider southern route.

Udzungwa is commonly reached overland via Mikumi and the southern highlands, making it ideal for travellers who want to connect wildlife with active exploration.

We recommend at least two nights when possible so the experience is more than a single rushed hike.
