Day by day
Your Kilimanjaro Itinerary
Follow the journey day by day, from your pre-climb preparation in Arusha through the changing ecological zones of Kilimanjaro, summit night and your return from the mountain. Each day is paced around safe progress, acclimatisation and the conditions your guides find on the trail.
Day 1
Arrival and climb briefing
Arrive in Tanzania and transfer to your lodge for rest. Later, meet your mountain team for a full briefing, equipment inspection and discussion of the climb, daily health checks, emergency procedures and how to pace yourself for altitude. We also confirm your park paperwork, dietary requirements and personal climbing goals, and answer any last questions before departure. You will have time to organise your duffel and daypack, charge devices and get a good night’s sleep; the aim is to begin the mountain rested, prepared and clear about what each day will involve.

Day 2
Mti Mkubwa Camp
Walk through the western rainforest to Mti Mkubwa, a sheltered first camp beneath tall trees. The gentle opening stage allows the team to establish a comfortable rhythm while you begin adapting to the mountain environment. Your guide keeps the walking pace deliberately steady, with regular opportunities to drink, adjust layers and take short rests. On reaching camp, the priority is recovery: a warm meal, hydration, a health check and a clear briefing about the next day so you always understand what lies ahead.
Mountain stage: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Day 3
Shira Plateau
Climb out of the forest onto Kilimanjaro’s vast Shira Plateau. The change in vegetation and open volcanic scenery creates a dramatic day, with an unhurried pace chosen to support acclimatisation. The open plateau gives wide views across the old Shira volcanic landscape and, when the weather clears, toward Kibo. Walking is kept intentionally steady because the altitude is now a more important factor than distance alone. After reaching camp, there is time for lunch, recovery and, where appropriate, a short acclimatisation walk before returning to sleep lower and continue the climb-high, sleep-low strategy.
Mountain stage: Shira Plateau
Day 4
Lava Tower and Barranco
Gain altitude toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. This classic high-low profile supports acclimatisation and ends among giant groundsels beneath the imposing Barranco Wall. The purpose of the higher point is acclimatisation as much as progress: you spend useful time at altitude before descending to a lower camp to sleep. The terrain becomes increasingly alpine and exposed, so weather and temperature can change quickly during the day. Your guide manages the pace carefully, encourages steady hydration and checks how you are responding before the descent into the next valley.
Mountain stage: Lava Tower and Barranco
Day 5
Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall and continue through high valleys to Karanga. The shorter stage balances effort and recovery and gives the body more time to adjust before moving to the summit base. Your guide keeps the walking pace deliberately steady, with regular opportunities to drink, adjust layers and take short rests. On reaching camp, the priority is recovery: a warm meal, hydration, a health check and a clear briefing about the next day so you always understand what lies ahead.
Mountain stage: Karanga Camp
Day 6
Barafu Camp
Continue through barren alpine terrain to Barafu. Your guide reviews summit clothing and pacing while the crew serves an early meal and you rest before the overnight climb. Your guide keeps the walking pace deliberately steady, with regular opportunities to drink, adjust layers and take short rests. On reaching camp, the priority is recovery: a warm meal, hydration, a health check and a clear briefing about the next day so you always understand what lies ahead.
Mountain stage: Barafu Camp
Day 7
Uhuru Peak and Mweka
Begin the summit ascent in darkness, reaching the crater rim and continuing to Uhuru Peak if conditions allow. Descend to Barafu and then lower to Mweka Camp for rest in thicker air. This is the longest and most demanding stage of the itinerary, so the emphasis is on a slow, consistent rhythm rather than speed. Your guide checks how you are responding to altitude throughout the ascent and can adjust the pace or turnaround decision when necessary. After the summit photographs, the descent requires equal concentration; you return to lower elevation for food, rest and a well-earned night in thicker air.
Mountain stage: Uhuru Peak and Mweka
Day 8
Mweka Gate and recovery
Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate, complete park formalities and transfer to your lodge. The rest of the day is reserved for showering, eating and recovering before the safari portion begins. After the formalities at the gate, the focus shifts completely to recovery: a private vehicle returns you to the lodge for a hot shower, a substantial meal and time off your feet. This is also when the climb can be celebrated with the crew before you continue to safari, Zanzibar or your international departure.
Mountain stage: Mweka Gate and recovery
Day 9
Tarangire National Park
After the mountain, shift into safari mode with a private drive to Tarangire. Explore baobab country and elephant habitat at an easy pace, allowing your body to recover while enjoying your first wildlife experience. Because this follows the mountain, the day is kept private and flexible rather than rushed. Your guide can adjust departure time, picnic stops and the length of game drives around your energy level while still making the most of wildlife activity. Comfortable lodging, a proper meal and time to recover remain an important part of the post-climb experience.
Mountain stage: Tarangire National Park
Day 10
Ngorongoro highlands
Travel through the Rift Valley and climb into the green Ngorongoro highlands. The day is deliberately relaxed, with time for scenic stops, cultural experiences or simply settling into your lodge before the crater visit.
Mountain stage: Ngorongoro highlands
Day 11
Ngorongoro Crater
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a private game drive across grasslands, forest and wetlands. The compact ecosystem supports dense wildlife, including elephants, lions, buffalo and, with luck, black rhino.
Mountain stage: Ngorongoro Crater
Day 12
Central Serengeti
Continue into the Serengeti, game viewing along the way as the landscape opens into vast plains. Your guide adjusts the route around seasonal wildlife movement and current sightings.
Mountain stage: Central Serengeti
Day 13
Serengeti game drive
Spend a full day exploring the Serengeti with the flexibility of a private vehicle. Start early for cooler temperatures and active predators, return to camp if desired, or stay out with a picnic lunch for a longer wildlife day.

Day 14
Fly to Zanzibar
Leave the safari circuit by light aircraft and arrive on Zanzibar for a change of pace. A private transfer takes you to your chosen hotel, with the rest of the day free to settle into island life. This part of the journey is deliberately unhurried after the physical demands of Kilimanjaro and safari. Transfers are private, and activities can be kept light or added according to your interests. There is ample time for swimming, resting and enjoying the coast before the next arranged experience or your onward flight.
