Day by day
Your Kilimanjaro Itinerary
Follow the journey day by day, from your pre-climb preparation in Arusha through the changing ecological zones of Kilimanjaro, summit night and your return from the mountain. Each day is paced around safe progress, acclimatisation and the conditions your guides find on the trail.
Day 1
Arrival and private briefing
Your Kilimanjaro journey begins with a private transfer to your lodge and time to recover from travel. In the evening, your lead guide reviews the route, checks personal equipment and explains the pace, safety procedures and health monitoring used on the mountain. We also confirm your park paperwork, dietary requirements and personal climbing goals, and answer any last questions before departure. You will have time to organise your duffel and daypack, charge devices and get a good night’s sleep; the aim is to begin the mountain rested, prepared and clear about what each day will involve.

Day 2
Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
Travel to Londorossi Gate for registration and continue to the western trailhead. Walk through quiet rainforest to Mti Mkubwa, where the lower traffic and rich forest create a gentle introduction to the Lemosho side of Kilimanjaro. Your guide keeps the walking pace deliberately steady, with regular opportunities to drink, adjust layers and take short rests. On reaching camp, the priority is recovery: a warm meal, hydration, a health check and a clear briefing about the next day so you always understand what lies ahead.
Mountain stage: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
Day 3
Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1
Climb out of the rainforest into heath and open moorland. As you reach Shira Ridge and descend gently toward Shira 1, the scale of the Shira Plateau and distant Kibo cone begin to dominate the landscape. The open plateau gives wide views across the old Shira volcanic landscape and, when the weather clears, toward Kibo. Walking is kept intentionally steady because the altitude is now a more important factor than distance alone. After reaching camp, there is time for lunch, recovery and, where appropriate, a short acclimatisation walk before returning to sleep lower and continue the climb-high, sleep-low strategy.
Mountain stage: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1
Day 4
Shira 1 to Shira 2
Cross the broad Shira Plateau on a relatively gentle day that supports acclimatisation without excessive strain. There is time to enjoy volcanic scenery, wide views and, when conditions allow, an optional acclimatisation walk from camp.
Mountain stage: Shira 1 to Shira 2
Day 5
Shira 2 via Lava Tower to Barranco
Climb gradually toward Lava Tower at higher altitude before descending to Barranco Camp. The day is intentionally designed around “climb high, sleep low,” helping acclimatisation while introducing the stark alpine desert and giant groundsels around Barranco. The purpose of the higher point is acclimatisation as much as progress: you spend useful time at altitude before descending to a lower camp to sleep. The terrain becomes increasingly alpine and exposed, so weather and temperature can change quickly during the day. Your guide manages the pace carefully, encourages steady hydration and checks how you are responding before the descent into the next valley.
Mountain stage: Shira 2 via Lava Tower to Barranco
Day 6
Barranco to Karanga and Barafu
Start by climbing the Barranco Wall, then traverse a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga. Continue to Barafu on the exposed upper slopes, where the crew prepares an early meal and your guide completes final summit checks. The day begins with the Barranco Wall, a hands-on hiking section rather than a technical climb, followed by a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga. On this shorter Machame variation you continue onward to Barafu the same day, making this a long stage and one reason the six-day program is better suited to strong trekkers with previous altitude experience. At Barafu, the priority becomes eating, hydrating, preparing summit layers and resting before the night ascent.
Mountain stage: Barranco to Karanga and Barafu
Day 7
Barafu to Uhuru Peak and Mweka
Begin the summit ascent around midnight, moving slowly through scree toward Stella Point and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Barafu for rest before continuing to Mweka Camp at a much lower altitude. This is the longest and most demanding stage of the itinerary, so the emphasis is on a slow, consistent rhythm rather than speed. Your guide checks how you are responding to altitude throughout the ascent and can adjust the pace or turnaround decision when necessary. After the summit photographs, the descent requires equal concentration; you return to lower elevation for food, rest and a well-earned night in thicker air.
Mountain stage: Barafu to Uhuru Peak and Mweka
Day 8
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, complete national park formalities and receive summit certificates. Your private transfer meets you for the drive back to the lodge and a well-earned recovery. Before walking, the team completes park registration, weighs crew loads and organises the equipment for the mountain. Once on the trail, your guide sets a deliberately comfortable pace with regular pauses for water, layers and photographs; lunch is taken en route or at camp depending on the day. On arrival, the crew helps you settle in, followed by a warm meal, a health check and a briefing for the following stage.

Day 9
Private departure transfer
Enjoy breakfast and a private transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or continue into a tailor-made safari, Zanzibar stay or another East African journey. Breakfast and check-out are arranged around your onward plans, and your private transfer is timed for Kilimanjaro International Airport or your next Tanzania experience. If your flight leaves later in the day, additional lodge time can be arranged where available, giving you an unhurried end to the journey.
