Day by day
Your Kilimanjaro Itinerary
Follow the journey day by day, from your pre-climb preparation in Arusha through the changing ecological zones of Kilimanjaro, summit night and your return from the mountain. Each day is paced around safe progress, acclimatisation and the conditions your guides find on the trail.
Day 1
Arrival, briefing and equipment check
Settle into your lodge before meeting your guide for a thorough pre-climb briefing. Because Umbwe gains altitude quickly, special attention is given to fitness, acclimatisation, hydration, equipment and the importance of reporting any symptoms early. We also confirm your park paperwork, dietary requirements and personal climbing goals, and answer any last questions before departure. You will have time to organise your duffel and daypack, charge devices and get a good night’s sleep; the aim is to begin the mountain rested, prepared and clear about what each day will involve.

Day 2
Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
Begin on Kilimanjaro’s steepest forest approach. The trail climbs sharply along a ridge between deep valleys, passing through dense rainforest before reaching Umbwe Camp; the day is demanding, so your guide keeps a measured and controlled pace. Before walking, the team completes park registration, weighs crew loads and organises the equipment for the mountain. Once on the trail, your guide sets a deliberately comfortable pace with regular pauses for water, layers and photographs; lunch is taken en route or at camp depending on the day. On arrival, the crew helps you settle in, followed by a warm meal, a health check and a briefing for the following stage.

Day 3
Umbwe Cave to Barranco Camp
Continue steeply upward as the forest thins into heath and rocky terrain. The route eventually opens toward Barranco Valley and its giant senecios, where Umbwe joins the southern circuit beneath the Barranco Wall. Umbwe gains height quickly and the trail can feel steep from the beginning, which is why this program is intended for fit trekkers and is approached conservatively. Your guide deliberately controls the tempo, schedules frequent short rests and watches closely for signs that the rapid altitude gain is affecting you. Reaching camp with strength in reserve is the priority, not walking quickly.
Mountain stage: Umbwe Cave to Barranco Camp
Day 4
Barranco acclimatisation day
Use this extra day to recover from Umbwe’s rapid initial ascent and improve acclimatisation. Your guide leads a controlled hike to higher ground before returning to Barranco, prioritising hydration, rest and careful monitoring. The goal is to expose the body to a little more altitude without carrying the full effort of moving camp. You walk slowly to a higher point, spend some time there, and then return lower for food and rest. This extra time on the mountain is valuable because acclimatisation cannot be rushed, and your guide uses the day to assess hydration, appetite, sleep and overall response to elevation.
Mountain stage: Barranco acclimatisation day
Day 5
Barranco to Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall with close guide support, then continue across rolling high-altitude valleys toward Karanga. The distance is moderate and the day is designed to conserve energy while continuing acclimatisation. The Barranco Wall looks dramatic from camp, but it is a guided scramble on a well-established trail rather than technical rock climbing. Above the wall, the route crosses several high valleys with excellent views back toward the southern glaciers before reaching Karanga. The relatively moderate distance is intentional: it gives your body more time to adapt while preserving energy for Barafu and summit night.
Mountain stage: Barranco to Karanga Camp
Day 6
Karanga to Barafu Camp
Climb into the stark alpine desert toward Barafu, the final base before the summit attempt. Arrive early, eat well, organise your summit layers and rest as much as possible before the nighttime departure. The landscape becomes drier and more austere as you enter the alpine desert and approach the final summit base. This is not a day to rush; arriving with energy in reserve is more valuable than arriving early. At Barafu, your guide conducts another health check and summit briefing, while you organise warm layers, gloves, headlamp, water and snacks before an early dinner and several hours of rest.
Mountain stage: Karanga to Barafu Camp
Day 7
Barafu to Uhuru Peak and Mweka
Begin the summit ascent around midnight, moving slowly through scree toward Stella Point and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Barafu for rest before continuing to Mweka Camp at a much lower altitude. This is the longest and most demanding stage of the itinerary, so the emphasis is on a slow, consistent rhythm rather than speed. Your guide checks how you are responding to altitude throughout the ascent and can adjust the pace or turnaround decision when necessary. After the summit photographs, the descent requires equal concentration; you return to lower elevation for food, rest and a well-earned night in thicker air.
Mountain stage: Barafu to Uhuru Peak and Mweka
Day 8
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, complete national park formalities and receive summit certificates. Your private transfer meets you for the drive back to the lodge and a well-earned recovery.
