Choose your main reason to travel
Uganda brings together forest primates, savannah wildlife and river landscapes. Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga feels very different from a game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park or a day near the Nile in Murchison Falls.
Begin with the experience you would most regret missing. If gorillas are the priority, secure the trekking arrangements and build the rest of the route around them. If you mainly want wildlife and scenery, a different balance may suit you better.
Build around the right trekking base
Bwindi has different trekking sectors, and your accommodation needs to match the permit arrangements. A lodge described as being near Bwindi may still be inconvenient for your assigned briefing point.
Plan to arrive with enough time to settle in before the trek. Forest terrain and the gorillas’ movements make the length and demands of the day variable, so a relaxed evening afterwards is worth protecting.
Add chimpanzees and savannah thoughtfully
Kibale is a key destination for chimpanzee tracking. Queen Elizabeth offers a contrasting landscape of wildlife areas and waterways. Together, these can create a varied western Uganda journey when the driving days are sensibly spaced.
Murchison Falls adds the Nile and another wildlife setting, but it also changes the route. Include it because you want that experience and have the time, rather than because every park must appear in one itinerary.
Respect the transfer days
Road travel is part of the experience, yet distances on a map can hide the time needed for slower roads, stops and the final approach to a lodge. Ask for realistic door-to-door estimates.
Where flights are available, compare schedules, luggage allowances and onward transfers. Fewer stops with longer stays often create a more comfortable journey than an ambitious route with little recovery time.
Prepare for different environments
Pack for both forest and savannah conditions, with footwear suitable for wet terrain and practical protection for your camera and day bag. Confirm activity eligibility and current park requirements before booking.
Legacy can build a Uganda journey around your energy, interests and available time, with the primate experiences treated as complete days rather than quick additions.
