Uganda Beyond Gorillas: Choosing Your Wildlife Parks

Compare Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley and Lake Mburo for a balanced safari.

Discover Uganda

Give the savannah its own place

Uganda’s forests attract much attention, but its wildlife parks deserve time of their own. A game drive, a river outing and a forest trek create different ways of seeing the country.

Choose parks by landscape and route rather than trying to add all of them to a short journey. Good guiding and several days in the right area often matter more than the number of park names on the itinerary.

Queen Elizabeth: wildlife and waterways

Queen Elizabeth National Park combines savannah, lakes, wetlands and the Kazinga Channel. It can provide a strong contrast to the forest experiences of western Uganda.

The park’s areas differ, so discuss where your lodge sits and which activities the route includes. Wildlife sightings, including the well-known tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, depend on conditions and cannot be guaranteed.

Murchison Falls: time beside the Nile

Murchison Falls National Park brings the Nile and wildlife landscapes into the journey. Choose it when you want that river setting and have room for the additional travel.

Ask which game-drive and river activities are included, their operating arrangements and the lodge’s position. A river experience and a game drive need their own time rather than being squeezed into a transfer day.

Kidepo Valley and Lake Mburo

Kidepo Valley offers a northern Uganda alternative that requires deliberate routing. It is best considered as a destination in its own right, with enough time to justify reaching it.

Lake Mburo can suit routes where its position and landscape add a useful contrast. Ask about the activities available for your dates and interests rather than assuming every wildlife park offers the same programme.

Build the journey around variety and pace

A rewarding route might combine a forest, one main savannah park and a quieter stop. Leave room for rest, weather changes and encounters that deserve more time than expected.

Legacy can compare these parks against your available days, preferred pace and wildlife interests, creating a journey with variety without making every day a long transfer.
