Also rewarding January–March.
Lake Manyara
Groundwater forest, Rift Valley escarpment, soda lake and a surprisingly rich mix of wildlife packed into one compact park.
Between Arusha, Tarangire and Ngorongoro.
A compact park with striking habitat variety.
Ideal for a half-day or full-day mixed experience.
Small in scale, rich in contrast.
Lake Manyara sits in a narrow corridor between the Rift Valley wall and the alkaline lake. Within a relatively small area, the scenery shifts from groundwater forest to acacia woodland, open grassland, hot springs and lakeshore.
It is best known for tree-climbing lions and flamingos, but we value Manyara just as much for elephants, hippos, baboons, birdlife and the variety it brings to a northern circuit. It works especially well for travellers who want to combine wildlife with a more active or cultural day nearby.
Five habitats in a remarkably small space.
Manyara’s compact geography means the experience can change quickly as you move from forest shade to open water and escarpment views.
Groundwater Forest
Dense green habitat with monkeys, elephant and a very different feel from open savannah.
Lakeshore
Seasonal flamingos and waterbirds animate the alkaline lake edge.
Acacia Woodland
Classic safari habitat where lions may sometimes rest in trees.
Maji Moto
Hot-spring country and open views toward the Rift Valley escarpment.
Forest, lake and unexpected encounters.
The park’s signature species may be the famous tree-climbing lions, but Manyara also offers elephant, hippo, baboon and prolific birdlife in a compact setting.
Tree-climbing Lion
A distinctive behaviour for which Manyara is famous, though sightings are never guaranteed.
Elephant
Frequently encountered in forest and woodland.
Hippo
Best associated with wetland and lake-edge habitat.
Flamingo & Birds
Seasonal numbers can be impressive, with excellent birding year-round.
What to look for.
Every safari is different. These are some of the defining species, landscapes and encounters associated with this destination.
Experience it with more context.
Forest Game Drive
Begin beneath the dense canopy before opening into grassland and lake views.
Canopy Walkway
Add a treetop perspective where available and suitable.
Hot Springs
Visit the Maji Moto area for a different landscape and a slower stop.
Mto wa Mbu Add-On
Pair the park with cycling, cooking or a locally guided community experience nearby.
Choose timing around the experience.
Manyara can be visited year-round. June to October offers classic dry-season conditions, while January to March can be especially attractive for flamingos, green scenery and birdlife.
Tanzania Best Time to Visit →An easy, flexible stop on the northern circuit.
Lake Manyara is around a 90-minute drive from Arusha and sits conveniently near Mto wa Mbu, Karatu and the road to Ngorongoro.
For many guests a half-day game drive is enough, but adding a canopy walk, cultural experience or relaxed lunch can turn the area into a rewarding full day.
