Why the Serengeti

The landscape that defines safari.

The Serengeti is one of Africa’s great wildlife landscapes: open grasslands, granite kopjes, river valleys and wooded country supporting extraordinary concentrations of resident game and predators.

The Great Migration gives the park its most famous seasonal drama, but the Serengeti is far more than one event. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and plains game remain compelling throughout the year, which is why we choose the part of the ecosystem around your dates rather than forcing every journey into the same route.

Know the landscape

Four Serengetis, one remarkable ecosystem.

Season and geography matter. Each region has a distinct rhythm, wildlife pattern and style of stay.

01

Southern Plains & Ndutu

Short-grass country associated with calving season, big skies and strong cheetah and predator activity from roughly December through March.

02

Central Serengeti · Seronera

A rewarding year-round base with riverine habitat, resident big cats and excellent flexibility for first-time Serengeti visitors.

03

Western Corridor · Grumeti

Woodland and river country where the migration moves west and north, especially from late May into July.

04

Northern Serengeti · Kogatende

Wild northern landscapes and access to the Mara River during the principal crossing season from July into October.

Following the Great Migration

The journey never truly stops.

Wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move through the greater Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in response to rainfall and fresh grazing. The spectacle changes month by month, so we position your camp and game drives around what is realistically happening on the ground.

JAN–MAR

Calving on the southern plains

Newborn herds and concentrated predator activity around Ndutu and the short-grass plains.

MAY–JUL

West and north

Long columns of animals move toward the Western Corridor and Grumeti before continuing north.

JUL–OCT

Northern river country

The herds gather around Kogatende and the Mara River, where crossings may occur unpredictably.

NOV–DEC

Returning south

Short rains encourage the migration back toward the southern Serengeti and fresh grazing.

Wildlife

Big cats, vast herds and rewarding detail.

Migration or not, the Serengeti is outstanding predator country and one of Tanzania’s most rewarding places for patient wildlife watching.

LionLarge prides and excellent year-round sightings
LeopardOften around riverine woodland and kopjes
CheetahEspecially suited to open southern and eastern plains
WildebeestThe great seasonal movement across the ecosystem
ElephantRegularly encountered in woodland and river country
Giraffe & plains gameConstant movement across the park’s open habitats
Beyond the game drive

Experience the Serengeti from a different angle.

01

Sunrise Balloon Safari

Float above the plains in the first light of day, followed by a bush breakfast in the wilderness.

02

Private Game Drives

Set your own pace with your guide, staying longer at meaningful sightings instead of following a fixed schedule.

03

Mobile Migration Camps

Seasonal camps can place you closer to the moving herds while retaining comfort and a strong sense of place.

04

Slow Safari Moments

Sunset on a kopje, a quiet bush picnic or time simply watching animal behaviour without rushing onward.

When to go

Choose the experience first, then the month.

The Serengeti works throughout the year. Dry-season months offer classic wildlife viewing and the northern migration period, while the green season transforms the southern plains and brings calving, dramatic skies and excellent photography.

Getting there

Fly in, or make the journey part of the safari.

Scheduled safari flights connect Arusha with Serengeti airstrips including Seronera and Kogatende. Travelling by road from Arusha via the Ngorongoro highlands takes longer, but lets the changing landscapes become part of the experience.

For a well-paced private trip, we often combine a scenic overland northern circuit with a flight out of the Serengeti — or use flights both ways when time is limited.
