Dry-season wildlife gathers around permanent water.
Tarangire
Ancient baobabs, the life-giving Tarangire River and some of northern Tanzania’s most memorable elephant country — spacious, seasonal and full of character.
An easy first or final park from Arusha.
River valley, woodland and open savannah.
Unhurried game drives with time for elephants and birdlife.
Elephants, baobabs and room to breathe.
Tarangire is one of northern Tanzania’s most rewarding contrasts to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The park is shaped by the Tarangire River, broad seasonal wetlands and a striking concentration of old baobab trees.
During the dry season, wildlife gathers around reliable water and elephant herds can be especially impressive. Even outside peak months, Tarangire rewards travellers who enjoy birdlife, quieter roads and a landscape with a very different rhythm from the open plains.
A park shaped by water and season.
Tarangire changes dramatically through the year. The river, marshes, woodland and open country each attract different wildlife and create varied game-viewing days.
Tarangire River
The park’s ecological spine and a dry-season gathering point for wildlife.
Baobab Country
Ancient trees create one of Tanzania’s most distinctive safari landscapes.
Silale Wetlands
Open marsh and floodplain habitat supporting elephants, birds and plains game.
Quieter Corners
Private guiding lets us explore beyond the busiest roads and linger where the sightings are best.
Elephant country at its best.
Tarangire is especially famous for large elephant herds, but the park also supports lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and exceptional birdlife.
Elephant
Large family groups gather around the river and wetlands, especially in the dry season.
Lion
Resident predators follow abundant plains game and water-dependent species.
Leopard
Woodland and riverine habitat provide good cover for these elusive cats.
Birdlife
A remarkably diverse park for birdwatchers across wetland, woodland and savannah.
What to look for.
Every safari is different. These are some of the defining species, landscapes and encounters associated with this destination.
Experience it with more context.
Private Game Drives
Follow the river and wetlands without a fixed convoy-style schedule.
Elephant Watching
Spend longer with family groups and observe behaviour rather than simply ticking a sighting.
Baobab Landscapes
Photograph the park’s ancient silhouettes in warm early and late light.
Night Safari Add-On
Where permitted and appropriately arranged, extend the day into Tarangire’s nocturnal world.
Choose timing around the experience.
June to October is the classic dry-season window, when wildlife concentrates around the river and permanent water. Green-season months bring lush landscapes, excellent birding and a softer, quieter atmosphere.
Tanzania Best Time to Visit →Close enough to begin safari properly.
Tarangire is usually reached by road from Arusha in around two to three hours, making it a natural first safari stop before Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
We often give Tarangire more than a quick drive-through. One or two nights allows time to explore the river, wetlands and quieter reaches of the park.
